About the Post:
Are you a registered nurse or midwife looking to develop your career in public health nursing?
Barnsley 0–19 Public Health Nursing Service is seeking enthusiastic, motivated and resilient Registered Nurses or Midwives to undertake the Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme in Health Visiting or School Nursing, commencing September 2026. We are excited to be able to offer the opportunity for places for 2 Students: 1 in Health Visiting, and 1 in School Nursing
This is an exciting opportunity to build on your existing professional knowledge and experience, develop specialist public health practice, and contribute to improving outcomes for children, young people, families and communities across Barnsley.
We are particularly interested in applicants who are passionate about reducing health inequalities, supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable children and families, delivering the Healthy Child Programme, and developing leadership skills within a dynamic and innovative public health nursing service.
About the programme
The SCPHN programme is a full-time, fixed-term course delivered in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University. The programme includes academic study and practice-based learning and is subject to successful University application and approval.
Students will work towards achieving NMC registration as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in either Health Visiting or School Nursing. The programme requires commitment, resilience and the ability to undertake independent study, including self-directed research, reading, preparation, written assessments and practice learning.
Within the practice setting, students will be supported by a practice supervisor and assessed by a qualified assessor in line with NMC standards for learning and assessment.

Successful nursing candidates will have NHS continuous service recognised for the purposes of annual leave and sickness absence and can continue to access the NHS Pension Scheme if they are an existing scheme member.
What you’ll need
Applicants must be current NMC registered first level nurses or midwives and be able to provide evidence of continued professional development in their current role.
Applicants will usually hold a First Degree Honours recognised in the UK. Sheffield Hallam University may consider applications on an individual basis where applicants hold an ordinary degree in Nursing or an Advanced Diploma in Nursing Studies. In these cases, applicants will need to demonstrate recognised prior learning and submit an extended CV to support their application. If applicable, this will be discussed at interview with our academic partner
Applicants must also demonstrate capability to study at Level 7 through written application and interview and meet the University entry requirements.
· Hold three GCSEs or equivalent at Grade 4/C or above in Mathematics, English Language or Literature, and a science subject.
· Have evidence of recent study within the last 10 years.
· Be able to work independently and flexibly.
· Demonstrate leadership and management potential.
· Have the courage, stamina and self-motivation to undertake an intensive year of academic and practice learning.

· Motivated to develop as a specialist public health nurse in Health Visiting or School Nursing.

Funding and start date
The course is due to commence at the beginning of September 2026. Places are subject to funding from Health Education England, Yorkshire and Humber.
For external candidates, this post is a Fixed Term Contract for 12 months
