To ensure continued provision of Public Health Nursing services within Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council we are seeking to recruit a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) who is passionate about wanting to lead and support the provision of high-quality services.  

About the Role 

We are looking for passionate and skilled Health Visitors and School Nurses to join our Public Health Nursing Service in Barnsley. In this role, you will deliver the Healthy Child Programme, providing evidence-based care that promotes health, reduces inequalities, and safeguards children, young people, and families. 

You will work closely with families to assess health needs, plan and implement interventions, and provide support for those with complex needs. This includes managing risk, undertaking safeguarding responsibilities, and contributing to multi-agency working to achieve positive outcomes. 

As part of the team, you will also lead public health initiatives within the community, mentor colleagues and students, and ensure high standards of clinical governance. Experienced practitioners will take a lead role in managing complex cases, supervising staff, and developing innovative approaches to care. 

About You 

You will be a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) with a Level 6 or above qualification and a commitment to continuous professional development. You will have experience of working in a community setting, delivering public health programmes, and safeguarding vulnerable children and families. 

You will be confident in managing complex situations, working collaboratively with other professionals, and using evidence-based practice to improve health outcomes. Strong communication skills, the ability to work autonomously, and excellent organisational skills are essential. For experienced practitioners, significant post-qualification experience and the ability to mentor and lead others are required.  

You Will Need 

To succeed in this role, you will need to be a qualified Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse) with a Level 6 or above qualification and a strong commitment to continuous professional development. You should have experience of working in a community setting, delivering public health programmes, and safeguarding vulnerable children and families. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to work autonomously, plan and prioritise effectively, and adapt to a changing environment. You will also need a sound understanding of the Healthy Child Programme, safeguarding policies, and clinical governance. For experienced practitioners, significant post-qualification experience, mentoring skills, and the ability to manage complex cases are required. A flexible approach, willingness to travel, and alignment with our values and behaviours as part of an inclusive, high-performing council are also key to success in this role.
