How do we sum up Barnsley Council? Well, we’re a double award-winning, high-performing council with a growing economy, a thriving town centre and some truly impressive outcomes in our communities. This is why we’ve been awarded Council of the Year for 2023 by the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) and The Municipal Journal (MJ).

Our excellent Public Health service has been a key part of our win; we’re so proud of what we’ve achieved not just for the council but for our partners and Barnsley.

We’re impressed. Are you? It’s the perfect time to join our excellent team.

About the Post:

We are seeking to appoint a Public Health Senior Practitioner for a position in the Public Health Team.

As a council, Barnsley places a big emphasis on public health. As a manager of various programs, you will play a crucial role in improving outcomes for the local community, both strategically and operationally. At Barnsley Council, we value creativity, ambition, and a focus on the people we serve. Our award-winning council is undergoing an exciting transformation, centred around placing local residents at the core of all our initiatives. We strive to listen to our communities and make decisions that benefit them. Our efforts have led to increased innovation, improved efficiency, and better value for money. These changes are evident through the emergence of new businesses and jobs, the vibrant town centre, enhanced school results, and unprecedented recognition as Council of the Year in 2023 from both the LGC and the MJ awards. That recognition continued in 2024 with our public health team winning in the public health category at the LGC awards.

Shape a better future with us

We’re thrilled to lead, support and develop people. Now we’d like you to be part of our success and help us take change further. Join us on our journey to a brighter future. By working together, with each other and with our communities, we can take pride in improving lives. Let’s make a better Barnsley for everyone. Truly, “the place of possibilities”.

Your role in our journey

As a Public Health Senior Practitioner, you’ll take the lead on achieving key public health outcomes. We will look to you to coordinate and lead programmes and develop excellent systems and processes. It’s a role that will call for you to work both strategically and operationally. As a dynamic person, you’ll lead the design, development and evaluation of evidence-based strategies for public health work. You’ll contribute to commissioning - from needs assessment to service evaluation - with a strong emphasis on reducing health inequalities. And you’ll provide specialist public health advice and expertise to a range of audiences.

What you’ll need

To join us, you’ll need a relevant degree and Level 7 qualification (or equivalent senior experience), and ideally included on the UK Public Health Register as a practitioner. We expect you to have a significant track record of leading major public health programmes. Crucially, you will also bring to the role substantial, senior level experience of managing complex relationships - and providing trusted advice - across diverse public, private and voluntary sector organisations. All you do will be underpinned by knowledge of the evidence base, local and national public health strategies, policies and legislation, local government and the NHS. You will be a great team player.

A lot to look forward to

Here at Barnsley, we live and work by four important values: honesty, teamwork, excellent service, and taking pride in what we do. As part of our team, you can be sure we’ll do all we can to support you in being truly excellent, as we prioritise learning and enabling you to achieve your potential. So, we’ve created a development process that lets you grow in the way that suits you - whether that’s training to be a leader or learning flexibly online. That’s one of the reasons why we are multi-award winning, and why you’ll find your career here inspiring and rewarding.
